I-Ching-Hexagram Fifty One - Thunder

 

Shock. Startle. Vibrate.

A blow and a shout.

 

In this hexagram (Thunder), its upper and lower trigrams imply shaking.

The meaning of this hexagram (Thunder) is derived from the trigrams shaking.

This hexagram (Thunder) has the meanings of changing, shaking, startling and shocking.

These meanings are extended to a blow and a shout.

 

The first line of the trigram of this hexagram (Thunder) is Yang, therefore, this line represents movement.

In terms of human relations, it means the oldest son because the first of the trigram of this hexagram (Thunder) is Yang.

If one asks the gender of a human embryo, the embryo must be male.

 

When things will change, people fear.

One must be cautious and look after one’s conduct by self-examination, so things will go smoothly afterwards.

“Shaking” / “Changing” is to awaken lazy people.

 

This hexagram (Thunder) describes a situation that a hard beginning makes a good ending.

This is good fortune.

Then, everything goes smoothly.

Feeling fear firstly and feeling happy secondly.

It is good fortune to feel fear.

One can keep his authority and has not been threatened.

 

1st Line

When it is shaking, it makes people feeling scared.

Therefore, people are screaming.

Then, everything goes smoothly.

Feeling fear firstly and feeling happy secondly.

It is good fortune to feel fear.

One can keep his authority and has not been threatened.

The statement of this line is the same as the summary of this hexagram (Thunder) because this line is the master.

 

 

2nd Line

 

Shaking triggers danger so many properties and valuables are lost.

Therefore, people flee to highlands.

No need to chase what one has lost.

One will get them back in 7 days.

 

This is the image of loss but lost things will be found.

Yin energy of this line is supported by Yang energy of 1st line of this hexagram (Thunder).

The 1st line is the master so it is dominant.

Therefore, this line faces danger so one loses valuables.

When this line is moderate and it is Yin energy staying at Yin position, it will find the lost valuables.

Mutable danger causes loss at the beginning but lost valuables will be found at the end.

Normally, 7 days means 7 days but it means a cycle in I-Ching.

 

 

3rd Line

 

One can go there as there is no disaster.

 

It is thundering again and again.

When it refers to change, it is like a wave.

A new wave arises when the previous one has barely subsided.

One can start going there as there is no disaster.

 

This line describes a situation which makes one worries.

When change or thunder comes, it makes people worry.

Continuous thunder and change makes people worry again and again.

This line is the top line of the lower trigram of this hexagram (Thunder).

On top of this line is the upper trigram of this hexagram (Thunder).

Therefore, this line stays between 2 Thunders.

 

 

4th Line

Because of shaking, one has sunk into mud.

Things cannot be developed fully.

Aspirations cannot be actualized.

 

In this line, it is a Yang line at a Yin position so it is not in the right position.

And this line is controlled by 5th line of this hexagram (Thunder).

The 6th line of this hexagram (Thunder) has a sign of sinking into mud which one cannot get out of it.

This does not uplift a person and makes one feeling dejected.

 

 

5th Line

 

One gets around outside bringing in danger.

If one has achievements, one will not lose something even though there are obstacles.

 

In this hexagram (Thunder), Yang energy of 4th line supports Yin energy of 5th line.

4th line of this hexagram (Thunder) is the master of the upper trigram.

Therefore, this line and 2nd line of this hexagram (Thunder) are in danger.

However, this line is located at the position of the emperor and it is moderate so it will have achievements.

If one pulls oneself together and has achievements, one turns peril into safety and avoids loss even though there are obstacles.

On the contrary, if one is afraid and avoiding handling the issue, one may face disasters.

 

 

6th Line

 

It is shaking but one is in low spirits.

One feels uneasy because of worrying.

If one goes to war with this attitude, it will bring in misfortune.

It is shaking but one keeps out of the affair.

There is no fault.

Remarriage brings in gossip.

 

This is the last line of this hexagram (Thunder).

It is the nock of a strong bow.

One is in low spirits and worrying.

If one takes actions with this attitude, one will fail.

Therefore, it is misfortune to go to war.

This change affects 5th line of this hexagram (Thunder).

In this hexagram (Thunder), its 4th line and its 5th line are the neighbours of this line.

During this period of change, this line keeps out of the affair.

Although it is not a fault but this brings in gossip.
